Emergency Care/Trauma Center
1204 Mound St. • Nacogdoches
NMH continues to provide the premier emergency medical department in the area, designated by the Texas Department of Health as a Level III Trauma Center. Nacogdoches County currently has the only Level III Trauma Center within an hour's drive north and even further to the south.
Our ER, physicians, surgical services, ambulance service and support programs, such as lab and medical imaging, put in tremendous effort to secure that designation. It took countless hours studying our policies, perfecting the way we deliver emergency care, mapping responsibilities, re-thinking processes and providing supporting data once we manipulated our systems.
Our goal is to have a team waiting at the back door, ready to go to work, whenever a trauma patient comes in. Everyone on that team knows their role and standard processes are in place, so instead of waiting on a doctor to say "we need to draw blood," we will already be waiting for the results of those tests.
Level III Trauma Centers are required to:
• Retain a trauma surgeon on hospital staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
• Offer general surgery.
• Keep dedicated ER physicians in-house 24 hours a day.
• Have anesthesiologists and other specialists on-call and promptly available.
• Have nursing care standards that are up-to-date for trauma.
• Offer 24-hour lab services.
• Maintain an intensive care unit.
Addressing specific needs of the community, the new FastTrack service located within the ER provides expert care for after-hours needs like sprains, strains, infections and other non-emergency (but still urgent) medical care.
Securing Level III designation guarantees Nacogdoches residents that if they are involved in a trauma, Memorial Hospital is not only where they want to be, it is where they need to be.
