With patient comfort and safety in mind, major funds have been invested in the Medical Imaging Department, at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital with the addition of a state of the art digital imaging facility, special procedures room and an update to computer systems and mammography services. We pride ourselves on adding medical imaging features that benefit the patient in high-speed, state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities never before available to East Texans.

New mammography equipment at The Breast Care Center allows stereotactic or "needle" breast biopsies instead of the traditional incisional type of biopsy. The Breast Care Center also recently added a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system that digitally scans mammogram films for abnormalities in breast tissue, which could result in a 23 percent increase in breast cancers detected, according to national studies.

Memorial has continued to upgrade our in-house magnetic resonance imaging unit, maintaining the most powerful magnet available in this area and ensuring the fastest exam times and better images.

A mobile open MRI system is also transported to Nacogdoches Memorial once a week for patients who need a less confining environment and greater freedom of movement. The open magnet is especially beneficial for claustrophobic patients, patients who weigh up to 400 pounds and children who need to be accompanied by a parent during the exam.

In the field of nuclear medicine, Memorial's imaging department updated cameras and equipment to reduce exam time by as much as 50 percent, guaranteeing a more comfortable experience for the patient and better diagnostic images for the physician. Again, Memorial is the first facility in East Texas to utilize this new technology.
