Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed for anyone who has experienced stable angina (chest pain), a heart attack, or any type of heart surgery. Memorial's cardiac rehab program is divided into four phases, with each patient's exercise prescription custom designed for that individual, based upon his or her capabilities.
Participants entering the Pulmonary Rehab program are given an exercise test designed to quantify patient symptoms, determine causes of dyspnea, determine potential for work, assess functional abilities and prescribe levels of exercise for individual programs. Clinical professionals monitor patient's exercise tolerance by tracking respiratory rates, heart rates, pulse oximetry and through pulmonary function testing. Conditioning exercises under direct supervision are conducted two to three times per week for up to six to eight weeks. Home exercise programs are designed for individual patients and are taught prior to discharge so our clients can continue to exercise on their own, utilizing self-monitoring techniques learned during their program.
The goal of both the Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab programs is to increase the functional capacity of patients, assisting them in attaining a normal activity level in their daily lives and decreasing the frequency of necessary hospitalizations, thereby lowering healthcare costs for all of us.
