All auxiliary members are required to be familiar with all areas of the hospital and to be prepared to give directions or escort visitors to their location, as needed.

Specific areas of work include:

Front Desk: Auxiliary members greet patients and visitors, assist with registering patients, help visitors locate patients, answer the telephone and assist with calls to other stations, run errands,  and assist with delivering cards, mail, and flowers.

Gift Shop: Auxiliary members run the hospital’s Gift Shop. They restock shelves, help keep the shop neat and orderly and blow up balloons with helium.

ICU/IMC desk: Auxiliary member have a  list of patients  and check for special visiting privileges and information that may be given to visitors, try to relieve anxiety of family members by remaining calm, patient and understanding, and help keep waiting rooms neat and orderly.

Emergency Room: Auxiliary members assist Emergency Room personnel in the care of patients. They try to make patients as comfortable as possible and try to relieve the anxiety of patients and family members. They help keep the ER neat and clean, assist in transporting patient(s) to the floor and to and from outpatient service areas, assist in putting away and replenishing supplies in the treatment rooms, and assist in delivering lab specimens.

Day Surgery and Gastroenterology Lab: Auxiliary members assist nursing staff in non-nursing duties, including answering the phone, making coffee, offering juice, folding gowns and ordering and picking up refreshments from the kitchen. They also assist outpatient services in delivering patients to X-Ray, Lab, and Cardio, escort discharged patients to the exit, deliver autoclavable packets to and from Central Service and carry tissue biopsies to the Pathology Lab.

Floor cart: Auxiliary members serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate and juices to patients and their family members, and answers questions and give directions to visitors.

Women and Children Services: Auxiliary members take baby pictures, fold and put away baby clothes, rock and hold babies, help feed babies, give support to families waiting for delivery, and perform errands.

Children’s Surprise Bags: Auxiliary members assist in making a child’s stay in Memorial Hospital more relaxed and less traumatic by providing surprise bags, with gifts appropriate to child’s age and sex. 

Hospitality: Auxiliary arrange for refreshments each month prior to the Auxiliary meetings, coordinate preparations for the covered dish luncheon in May, plan refreshments for special events such as Recruitment Receptions, and assist the hospital personnel in staffing volunteers for any special event planned by the hospital.

Magazines: Auxiliary members acquire magazines from the post office, other volunteers, and friends, remove the address labels or scratch them out with a black marker, arrange the magazines according to classification, and rearrange and sort magazines in each Waiting Room.
