Memorial welcomes new laboratory director, Alan Wells
At the end of July, Alan Wells joined the Memorial Hospital family as our new laboratory administrative director, bringing with him almost four decades of experience.
“I have had several laboratory director positions since 1983 in facilities ranging from 50 beds to over 500 beds,” he said. “I have been the lab director in one Level I Trauma Center and two Level II Trauma Centers.”
In addition to his past positions as lab director, Alan has also held positions in Brownsville, TX and Alexandria, LA where he served as director of radiology and cardiopulmonary services along with his duties as laboratory director. In McAllen, TX, he filled the role of area laboratory director over three facilities and while in Brownsville, served as director of ancillary and support departments in a start-up surgical hospital in Brownsville.
The Viet Nam veteran grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota and attended college at St. Cloud State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology.
“I lived for eight years in Sioux Falls, SD, and for five years in Torrington, WY,” Alan said, recalling that the weather was a major factor in his decision to leave those areas. “I moved to Texas from Wyoming after a winter where the wind chill got down to -85 degrees on Christmas Eve in 1987. I decided I wasn’t going to freeze anymore or scoop any more snow!”
Alan and his wife, Lupita, have six children and 12 grandchildren, six girls and six boys scattered from Waco to Denver. He also has fur babies. “I say my current kids are my five Chihuahuas,” he admits with a chuckle.
“In my spare time, I like to visit my grandson in Waco. My favorite hobby is playing golf and my handicap is my swing!”
When asked about a favorite quote, Alan picked a golf quote by Lee Trevino that resonates. “You can tell when you’re getting older because you can’t see the ball land, but you can hear it.”
Alan, we think you’ll enjoy the warm weather, the warm welcome and the great golf in Nacogdoches.
